I never ever ever want to be the person whose heart fills with bitterness when I see friends announce their pregnancies or adoptions. Their blessings do not change my circumstances. And beyond that, my peace and joy and righteousness are not dependent on my circumstances.

My circumstances should not diminish the absolute joy I have for those friends. Yet each announcement I see, my instant heart response is jealousy and bitterness instead of joy.

But if I’ve learned anything from going to counseling the last three years of my life, it’s that we shouldn’t feel bad or guilty about the emotions we feel. The reality is we feel that emotion. The important part is what we do with that emotion. If you struggle with those negative heart responses, know you’re not alone.

Each time my heart response to someone’s amazing news is negative, I intentionally choose to replace it with gratitude. Thank you Jesus for all the things you bless me, and continue to bless me, with. Thank you for the things you bless my friends with; for the families you are creating. ♥️
