Last year at one of my weddings my friend (and second shooter for that wedding!) Ben introduced me to one of my favorite apps I’ve ever used! The couples’ wedding day was dark and gloomy; looking like rain at any second. This normally wouldn’t have been that big of deal, except their wedding was taking place OUTSIDE!! Ben whipped out his phone, and started telling me about Dark Sky.
Photographer friends, stop what you’re doing right now, and go purchase this app! It costs 3.99 but it’s a life saver for gloomy wedding (or portrait!) days!
This app lets you know exactly when it will rain (or snow!) up to 1 hour in advance in your exact location! It shows the radar, and a daily and weekly forecast.ย You’re also able to seeย a detailed breakdown of current conditions, including wind speed and direction, humidity, pressure and visibility. The best part is that you can even set it to alert you when rain is about to start!
We used this app for Gabe and Meghan’s wedding. About 10 minutes before it was supposed to start raining, I let them know that we should step out side for quick rain portraits. We were able to head back inside just MINUTES before a heavy downpour (we’re talking flash flood warnings!) The best part was this portrait that resulted from this app! Are you convinced!?
