I became a mom overnight… actually over the course of 1.5 hours. No planning for nine months, no prepping my heart, no preparing a cute nursery before the arrival. Just a phone call, saying yes absolutely, and then a fresh baby arriving at our door.
And after almost 7 months, as I find myself thinking of the future, I also find him in it. I often think about what he’ll be like when he’s ___ years old. Or what about when he’s ____. Or what we’ll be doing or where we will be living when he’s ____. I catch myself making plans and dreaming and the plans and dreams include this little babe who has captured our hearts since the day he arrived in our home. Things feel normal around here finally. He’s apart of our lives, and it doesn’t feel right to dream about things without him in it.
But he’s not ours. He might not be in our future. Actually, the goal right now is for him to NOT be in our future; to be reunited with his bio family. We might not get to see him hit those certain milestones I so often catch myself dreaming about. Our new normal could shift drastically and we could go back to being just us overnight. No baby. No being parents. Just Ty, Alex and Nollie as quickly as our addition came.
This foster care stuff is weird and I cannot find any other word to describe it. It’s hard. It’s filled with joy & incredible. It’s 1000% WORTH IT but holy crap it’s weird. So I’ll just continue on the path. One day at a time, and each of those days are precious treasures in my heart.
