Tyler and I recently started going to marriage counseling.But before you cue the gasps, the shocked, almost pitiful looks, the “oh my gosh, did she just say they’re going to marriage counseling’s, let me interrupt and tell you that our marriage wasn’t at a breaking point. It wasn’t us throwing a Hail Mary to try to “save” it. It actually is going so very well!
Deciding to do marriage counseling has been the best decision we’ve ever made as a couple (and the best decision I could have ever made as an individual).
It was a decision that two people who have been together for 8 years, who have grown up together, who are living together but have different feelings, communication skills, dreams, upbringing, hormones, opinions and interests; made together.
During our sessions we laugh, I cry (just being honest here ????) but most importantly we are learning about how much the Father loves us, about grace, communication, boundaries, our identities, about how important our marriage is; how it’s okay to say no to GOOD things because it means we are saying yes to BETTER things, how to love and serve each other well, and how to honor and glorify our Father through our marriage.
If you are married, and have ever scoffed at the idea of marriage counseling, or said “oh no…counseling?! We don’t need counseling.” I highly recommend and ask you to reconsider. Look into finding a counselor in your area. I don’t think I will ever shut up about marriage counseling now that we’ve started.
I am SO very thankful for friends who pushed us to give it a try, and so very thankful for our counselor, Matt, who is such a great reflection of Christ.
